I took a walk down the high street this morning and was excited to see the work going on outside the Corks Club (Bearwood Road & Sherwood Road corner). This work has been funded as part of Sandwell’s High Street Improvement plans that Cllr Bob Piper told us about a while back.
Mick who runs the Corks club was outside taking a look himself and told me all about how the club is hoping that the patio and garden will become a place for Bearwood folk to take a rest, natter together, eat their lunch perhaps, and generally watch the busy world go by.
It’s taking shape nicely and Mick was telling me all about his hopes for the space:
We really want it to be somewhere that people feel they can use on a day to day basis. Everyone will be welcome to come and sit on the benches or the grass and enjoy having a bit of green space in the middle of the high street. The club is always open to newcomers and old timers alike as well – so if you fancy a tipple at the bar that’s an option too! You don’t have to be a member, as long as you sign in.
We know from doing We Are Bearwood events at the Corks Club, and from going to Silvershine Jazz Club there on a Thursday night, that it’s a really friendly gem of a place. Like most social clubs these days it’s a struggle to get the punters in, so when the new garden is finished make the most of it and maybe pop in to say hi to Mick and his team.
