Trowels at the ready! We declare the second biannual Front Gardens Competition officially open!

To enter the competition now CLICK HERE.  For judging criteria & conditions, eligibility map and more, read on! Please note that all front gardens will be included in our garden trail map so Bearwood folk can enjoy the greenery and vote for their favourite (yet another prize on offer!)

With thanks to our main competition sponsors Robert Oulsnam & Company.

You can read information on the prizes and all our generous sponsors right HERE.

A total prize pot of £500 is generously being provided by Robert Oulsnam & Company on Bearwood high street for the Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes. The deadline for entries will be 15 July 2015, after which a map of all entries will be provided so you can follow the trail. Judging will take place during the first two weeks of August.

But we know that the prizes are not the only thing you’re excited about!   The first competition in 2013 saw neighbours talking more, wandering the neighbourhood admiring the new gardening talent on show and generally helping our Bearwood to bloom.  Here’s what one prize winner told us:

“My immediate neighbours have supported me and teased me in equal measure, and strangers from further down the road have stopped for a chat, keen to talk about my flourishing potato crop… It’s been a great way of getting to know a few more people in my community and I feel a little bit proud every time I approach my front door now.”

And there were some lovely sights, like this first prize winner:

Gardens small, large, newly planted or established are all welcome and entry is FREE.  In addition to Gold (£300), Silver (£150) and Bronze (£50) awards, there will be special category prizes too.

Our lovely local garden centre Webbs will be sponsoring the prize for ‘Most Improved Garden’ (to be considered please send us a ‘before’ photo!) and there will also be prizes for:

  • Most Sustainable & Wildlife friendly garden

  • Best garden design

  • Postman’s Favourite’ (yes, your local posties will be judging that one!).

Please make sure you read the competition rules and judging criteria, and check the map below to see if you are eligible to apply:

Is this a local Bearwood event? Because my parents who live in Edgbaston, Birmingham are eligible but we , who live in Bearwood, are not? I literally live just on the edge of the map!

Hi Meredith, Oh no! It is a local event, absolutely. We have the challenge of Bearwood not really officially existing in postal areas or council boundaries (we are officially Smethwick I believe) – we’ve gone wider than the Abbey Ward and tried to use the main roads around Bearwood as our boundary. Where are you? Email me at wearebearwood@gmail.com if you’d rather not name your road in this public comment box!
    Sally Taylor.
